Frontline women, survivors, and former cutters are leading the anti-FGM movement in Liberia

While national prevalence rates remain at around

32%

FGM hotspots are concentrated in the North and West of the country, where almost 80% of women and girls are cut, driven by the Sande Bush – a secret women’s society which believes that FGM is a rite of passage into womanhood.

On February 6th 2026, for Zero Tolerance Day, a rally of frontline women, survivors, former cutters, religious leaders, and cultural influencers was led by local organisation Medica Liberia from village to village in the FGM hotspot regions of Liberia.

With them, they brought religious, medical, and legal messaging to remote communities, encouraging the collective abandonment of FGM, and carrying a united voice that girls are Born Perfect.

Medica Liberia is currently working with the Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM) in Sierra Leone to tackle cross-border cutting in a region-wide campaign, eliminating FGM from secret women’s societies which drive cutting in both countries
